How we got here

We began in March with a call to writers to enter our first flash fiction competition: The 1,000 Word Herd Flash fiction Competition. We chose a competition to help support our non-profit Press financially, showcase some wonderful writers, and to help fund our charity of choice, First Story.

We knew the response would be huge, so our editorial team consisted of four judges, one Overseer, and three incredible guest judges to rank the top 10 and provide additional feedback. Thank you to Scarlett Thomas, Stephanie Victoire, and Dan White for guest judging!

We received 122 flash fiction pieces to judge at the end of the competition week. We were utterly blown away by the quality of the submissions to the competition! To say that it was incredibly difficult to narrow down our top 20 favourites would be an understatement. So many delivered wonderful and innovative ideas from across the genres and styles and built on their prompts in ways that we couldn’t have imagined.

Our internal judges worked throughout April, reading all of the stories that we received, writing our feedback to every entry, and compiling our shortlist of 20 stories. We then sent our top ten winners to the guest judges and waited with bated breath for them to give us their verdicts.

We were extremely pleased to announce that Rob McIvor’s story, Children of the Moon as our winner in May. Read his 1st place flash fiction story here for free!
